The club supports running and racing on the roads and trails of this beautiful region. We organize group runs and races and help support other organizations that sponsor running events. Notes from our last Club Meeting BKVR Meeting 8/4/2026 – 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Arlington Recreational Park Present: Judy Orton, Ruth Jones, Gail Wood, Jenn Sharpe, Anita Gabalski, Rob Raffone, Dara Zink 1. Review of Minutes: 4/15/26 – approved 2. Membership Status: Nothing new to report 3. Treasurer’s Report: The P&L reports were discussed. ROTT earned a little under last year which is attributed to the anniversary shirts. ZemBenn came out in the red primarily due to low attendance and sponsorship. 4. Race Updates: a) ZemBenn – 5/3/26: Final report reviewed which showed a loss of $161.26. Changes to the race will be discussed in the future. b) Steps Toward Home – 6/13/26: Final report showed a profit of $1,939.00. $1,600.00 was donated to Bennington DCF. c) ROTT – 11/26/26: Judy will look at hats available through 4imprint. She will also confirm the race with the town in September. Underwood is already confirmed, and Fisher school will be dealt with separately. 5. Scholarships: Seven students were eligible for a portion of the scholarship money. To date, three students have received their checks. 6. Moonlight and Other Runs: The runs are still happening with the next planned for 8/28 or 8/29. 7. VT Walk/Bike Summit – Gail attended this event on May 8 as the BKVR representative. There is significant work and thought being given to make Vermont walk, bike, run and vehicle friendly while working together. The summit was very well attended by people from throughout the state. 8. Track Shoe Funding: A process to assist kids needing track shoes was discussed. Add a sneaker fund donation to the registration process and partner with Mountain Goat when a request is received. Consider ear marking $500 to start. Now into its 30th year! This family friendly race normally begins at Fisher Elementary School in Arlington, VT each Thanksgiving morning. Looking forward to in person racing and comradery in 2025. 2026 Online Registration Race Date: November 2 6, 2026 Start Time: 9:00 am for 5k; 8:45 am Kid's Race Location : Fisher Elementary Registration : Online or Mail in registration . In-person registration is available during packet pick up Wednesday night, November 25, 2026 at Fisher Elementary gymnasium from 5:30 - 6:30 pm and on day of race, November 26, but closes at 8:30 am. Onsite registration requires check or cash preferred please. You may pay on our website (additional processing fees, available 11/25 and 11/26) br ing proof of payment AND your completed registration form. **Please note, dogs, strollers and headphones are strongly discouraged due to requirements from RRCA. Strollers must start at the back of the pack. There is a 5 minute wait before runners with dogs will be allowed to run on a short 4' lead. Turkey Stuff: Turkey "bling" to the first 250 entrants in the 5K run and walk registered. It is a fundraiser to benefit Bennington County youth in foster care. Often when children first enter the foster system, all of their belongings are placed in garbage bags which can make them feel like garbage. Proceeds from the race and donations will be used to purchase and supply suitcases with fresh clothes, a teddy bear, and a note to help youth feel supported as they enter the most difficult time of their life. ZEM BENN 46th Zemianek Bennington Road Race, Sunday, May 2, 2027 RACE RESULTS 2026 This traditional Spring run in beautiful North Bennington, Vermont has returned. Two distances from which to choose, 3.8 mile and 10k. You will enjoy the course and the friendly competition. Proceeds support the Steve Zemianek MAU Scholarship, BKVR Scholarships and Park McCullough House. IN SUPPORT OF OUR LOCAL FOOD BANKS: Non-perishable food items will be collected on race day to distribute to the Bennington area food banks. LOCATION : Park McCullough House, 1 Park Street, North Bennington, VT 05257 COURSE: The 10K course will run through scenic rural countryside, along the Walloomsac River, and through a covered bridge (twice)! BKVR Scholarship Deadline April 30, 2026 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION (click for access) BKVR Past Scholarship Awardees Each year the Batten Kill Valley Runners Club (BKVR) issues scholarships to deserving high school graduating seniors with an interest in running and involved in the running community. The amount of these awards varies from year to year but may range from $250.00 to $5,000.00 depending on the applicant’s qualifications and the number of applicants. The program is open to students within southern Vermont and southern Washington County, New York, with priority given to applicants who have been members of the BKVR for at least one year. We encourage our members to apply! Scholarship Application Requirements: Applications must be submitted by April 30 each year. Applicants must be interested in running and must participate actively in the sport by participating on a school track or cross-country team or by being an active member of a running organization. Applicants must be: High School Seniors at schools located within the Batten Kill watershed or be BKVR members at any high schools, who are planning to graduate in June and will be attending college, university or technical school no later than the following spring semester after high school graduation. Applicants must complete the application form and must submit all required documents by mail (received by April 30) to the BKVR Scholarship Committee, 47 Gray Avenue, Greenwich, NY 12834 , or the applicant may email the completed package to battenkillrunners@gmail.com . Copies of the application may also be obtained from the same address. Awardees will receive their scholarship grant upon proof of registration for classes.
